Cracks in patios and driveways are extremely common and are one of the most frequent concerns raised by homeowners. It is easy to immediately fear subsidence or serious structural movement when lines begin appearing through concrete surfaces, particularly after hot weather, freezing conditions or periods of heavy rainfall.
In reality, external concrete behaves very differently from internal structural slabs.
Patios, driveways and other external concrete surfaces are constantly exposed to weather, temperature changes, moisture movement and changing ground conditions. All of these can influence how a slab behaves over time.

The important question is not simply whether a crack exists, but what the surrounding concrete is doing and whether the movement appears to be changing.
Why Do Patios and Driveways Crack?
Concrete naturally responds to changes in temperature. It expands during warmer conditions and contracts as temperatures fall, creating stresses within the slab over time.
Freeze-thaw cycles can also contribute to deterioration. Where water enters small cracks or defects and subsequently freezes, it expands. Repeated cycles of freezing and thawing can gradually contribute to deterioration of the surrounding concrete.
There is also the ground beneath the slab to consider.
Unlike an internal structural floor, an external patio or driveway is heavily influenced by its sub-base and surrounding ground conditions. Poor preparation beneath the concrete, local settlement, drainage problems, tree roots and heavy loading can all contribute to movement and cracking over time.
A crack therefore does not automatically mean there is a serious structural problem. It can simply be the visible result of how the concrete and the ground beneath it have behaved.
Should You Worry About Straight Cracks in Concrete?
Straight cracks can look particularly concerning because they sometimes appear too regular to be natural.
In reality, concrete commonly cracks along areas where stresses are concentrated. These may relate to construction joints, control joints, reinforcement layouts or areas where the slab has been restrained.
Control joints are deliberately introduced into concrete to encourage movement and cracking to occur in more predictable locations rather than randomly across the surface.

The shape of a crack alone therefore does not determine whether it is serious. A straight crack is not automatically evidence of subsidence or major ground movement.
When Are Patio and Driveway Cracks Less Concerning?
Fine hairline shrinkage cracks and stable surface movement are often associated with lower concern where the slab remains level and the cracking does not noticeably change over time.
Concrete can develop cosmetic cracking as it cures, while longer-term exposure to weather and temperature changes can introduce further minor cracking.
The useful distinction is between cracking that appears stable and movement that appears active.
A narrow crack that has remained largely unchanged for a long period, with no noticeable displacement of the surrounding slab, presents a very different picture from a crack that is progressively widening or causing sections of concrete to move.
This is why looking at the wider condition of the area is often more useful than concentrating on the crack alone.
What Are the Warning Signs to Look For?
What matters more is whether movement appears progressive or whether the slab itself is beginning to physically shift.
Pay closer attention where:
- one side of the crack becomes noticeably higher than the other
- the crack continues to widen over time
- sections of the slab rock or move underfoot
- the surrounding surface begins sinking or becoming uneven
- nearby walls or structures also show signs of movement
- standing water or poor drainage is present around the affected area
These signs do not automatically confirm a serious structural problem, but they can justify further investigation because the issue may extend beyond ordinary surface cracking.

Can Drainage Cause Driveway or Patio Cracks?
Drainage conditions can play an important role in external slab movement.
Where water regularly collects around or beneath a patio or driveway, it can affect the ground supporting the concrete. Poor drainage, leaking drainage systems or persistent standing water may gradually contribute to erosion or changes beneath the slab, increasing the possibility of local settlement.
The location of the cracking can therefore matter.
If cracking or sinking appears around drainage channels, gullies, inspection chambers or other drainage features, it may be sensible to consider whether water movement could be contributing to the problem rather than looking at the concrete in isolation.

Nearby retaining-wall movement or evidence of wider ground instability can also make external cracking more significant.
How Can You Monitor a Crack?
Not every patio or driveway crack requires immediate professional involvement.
In many cases, sensible monitoring is appropriate before escalating concerns. The aim is to establish whether the cracking appears stable or whether something is continuing to move.
Take clear, dated photographs from approximately the same position and periodically compare them. Look at the width of the crack, but also pay attention to whether the concrete on either side remains level.
Observe whether the condition changes following prolonged dry weather, heavy rainfall or colder periods.
You are not trying to diagnose the cause yourself. You are building a simple record that can help establish whether the condition appears stable or progressive.

When Should You Get Professional Advice?
For many localised external slab defects, a competent builder or concrete repair specialist may be an appropriate starting point.
A structural engineer is more likely to become relevant where movement appears progressive, there is significant displacement between sections, or the cracking appears alongside wider structural or ground-related concerns.
The important point is not to assume that every crack needs a structural engineer, but equally not to dismiss movement simply because it is outside the main building.
Where the evidence suggests something is changing, understanding why is more useful than repeatedly repairing the surface without addressing the underlying cause.
Most Patio and Driveway Cracks Are Not Structural
Most patio and driveway cracks are associated with natural shrinkage, thermal movement, curing behaviour or minor settlement rather than dangerous structural failure.
The presence of a crack alone therefore tells you relatively little.
What matters is the wider evidence: Is the crack stable? Is one side moving? Is the slab sinking? Is drainage poor? Are there signs of wider ground or structural movement?
A stable hairline crack in an otherwise level patio is very different from progressive cracking accompanied by displacement or settlement.
The key is to understand the difference and respond proportionately.
